Three Hillsboro Cross Country Athletes Run at Sectional Meet

Emma Wright, Michelle Jones, and Michael Wright represented Hillsboro High School Saturday at the Class 4 Sectional at Big Driver Golf Course in Washington, MO.  The race marked the end of the season for all three runners.

In the girls race, sophomore Emma Wright finished in 42nd place with a time of 20:58.95.  Wright says Saturday’s race provided her a learning experience.  “Even though I didn’t make it into the next round, I am still thankful that my season was a success,” she says.  “The sectionals course was tough, and this has motivated me to train harder for next season.  I thank God for all of my achievements this fall ,and can’t wait to do it again next year with my best friends.”

Freshman Michelle Jones crossed the finish line in 21:29.52.  Her time was was good for 56th place.  “The race was very hilly and challenging, but I thought that I accomplished going up the hills rather than down,” she says.  “During practice, going up Maple hill really helped with the race.  A big hill on the last mile really hit me, and I saw the last ten girls behind me, but I knew that the pain is only temporary, and it wasn’t over yet and sprinted up.  We didn’t make state, but if we all train over the winter and summer, there could be a big possibility that we could make it next year.  This season was great, and the hard work definitely paid off.”

On the boys side, junior Michael Wright finished in 63rd place, clocking in at 18:36.43.  He said the race wasn’t what he was envisioning.  “Saturday’s race was an overall disappointment.  The goal this season was to make it to state.  I am confused about why I ran so poorly.  My legs just did not have it.  On the whole, this cross country season was better than the last few years.  I ran much more consistently this season and ran a new PR.  I fixed some issues this year, and have also found some areas to improve for next season.  The race on Saturday serves as motivation for the coming track season and cross country next year.  I will take two weeks off and then start the grind of winter training for track.”

Congratulations to all three athletes on a great season.
