It was business as usual for the Ste. Genevieve boys JV basketball team on Monday. In opening the 2020 Old Settlement JV Tournament, the Dragons used nine different players to score and defeat the St. Pius Lancers, 59-39, at home. The win improves the team’s record to 9-1 on the season.
The Dragons owe their success this season to many things, but one facet of their play that is very consistent is the contribution of every player on the roster. Every player doesn’t have to score, but for many games this season, that seems to be the trend. This contest saw Nick Plati lead the team in scoring with 13 points. His seven points in the second quarter helped the team to a 34-20 halftime lead. More than that, the defense set the tone, allowing the Lancers just four points in the first quarter.
“I was extremely happy with our performance tonight,” JV coach Jon Robinson pointed out. “We played very well and seemed to be focused from the start. Our defense played with effort and energy, and offensively, we executed plays and shot the ball well. This may have been the JV’s best game this season.”
Blake Morganthaler scored ten first half points to be the other Dragon to hit double figures. Eight others made marks in the scorebook. Klayton Squires knocked down eight points, while Josh Pelfrey had seven. Thomas O’Brien and Carter Klump each scored six points respectively. Kaden Buatte registered five points, while Quentin Wittkopf and Jacob Johns both scored two points.
SGHS will take a break from tournament play, traveling to DeSoto tonight for a 6:00 p.m. tip. The tournament will resume at the high school on Wednesday, as the Dragons take on Windsor at 6:30 p.m.
