With a 57-45 victory over Park Hills Central Thursday at North County, the Ste. Genevieve boys JV basketball team finished the North County Tournament with a 2-1 record. The team’s season record is currently 18-3.
Against the Rebels, a nice second quarter allowed the Dragons to take a 32-23 halftime lead. Eight second quarter points from Quentin Wittkopf helped the Dragons to that lead. That was after Blake Morganthaler had a first quarter to remember, scoring 11 points to help keep the Dragons tied after the first quarter, 17-17.
But Central pulled to within one point at the end of the third quarter at 37-36, as Ste. Gen was able to score just five points in the quarter. But SGHS was tough at the line in the fourth quarter, and outscored PHC 20-9 to take the 12-point victory. The Dragons hit seven-of-eight free throws in the final quarter to seal the victory.
“We shot the ball extremely well tonight, especially in the first half,” JV coach Jon Robinson mentioned. “Our passing was very good, and we did an awesome job of making the extra pass to find the open man. Our free throw shooting in the fourth quarter sealed the game. The game was physical, and our team did a great job of staying focused and keeping their poise.”
Wittkopf led the way with 14 points, while Morganthaler contributed 11 points, and Kaden Buatte netted ten. Kaden Flye finished with nine points, Carter Klump scored six, and Thomas O’Brien and Klayton Squires scored four and three points respectively.
The Dragons will be at Oak Ridge on Tuesday. Tip off time is 6:00 p.m.
