It has been a tremendous season for the Ste. Genevieve boys junior varsity basketball team. After Friday’s victory at home over Festus, the team has won 21 of 24 games this season, and have just one more game remaining.
Friday, the team led for the entire game, defeating the Tigers 50-35. The Dragons opened the game with a 17-10 lead, but then saw the Tigers whittle away and trim it to four points by halftime. “We had a great start to the game offensively,” JV coach Jon Robinson noted. “We struggled to hit shots in the second quarter, but just like we have done all year, we played great defense which kept us in the game until shots started falling again.”
They started falling a bit better in the third quarter, and the defense just continued to stymie Festus. Festus scored ten points in the first quarter, nine in the second, and eight in both the third and fourth quarters. “In the second half, our defense caused them to turn the ball over for a few easy buckets, which led us to pull away,” Robinson said. “We keep talking about focusing on the process and paying attention to details during each possession, and if we do that, then a positive result will usually follow.”
The Dragons had balanced scoring in the victory. Blake Morganthaler knocked down 15 points to lead the team, and Kaden Buatte finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Thomas O’Brien scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Quentin Wittkopf ended the night with eight points and two blocked shots. Kaden Flye and Carter Klump added two points each. Flye collected five rebounds, and Klayton Squires tied for the team high with six rebounds.
Thursday will bring an end to the Dragons’ season, as they hit the road to play at Perryville. Tip off is slated for around 6:30 p.m.
