It’s tough enough to start a season with five straight games in a week. It’s doubly tough to play a tournament within that opening week. It goes without mentioning how tough it must be to win a tournament title within that week, and still go undefeated. That’s what the Ste. Genevieve boys junior varsity basketball team did this past week. With Friday’s 59-32 victory over Valle Catholic, the Dragons completed a perfect week that included a Meadow Heights Tournament championship.
“It was a great ending to a long week of basketball,” JV coach Jon Robinson. “It was a team effort with balanced scoring and good effort on the defensive end. I am proud of these guys, and the mental and physical toughness they displayed this week.”
With the exception of the first quarter, Friday’s home game was never in doubt. The Warriors held a 9-6 lead after the first quarter, but then Ste. Gen took over. Nick Plati and Carter Klump scored six second quarter points each, and Blake Morganthaler added five points. By the time the teams went into the locker room at halftime, the Dragons were up, 27-16.
The game would never be in question the rest of the way. SGHS led 42-25 after three quarters, and then won by 27 points.
Klump led the way with 12 points, while Plati was right behind with 11. Thomas O’Brien, Morganthaler, and Kaden Flye each scored nine points. All of Flye’s points came in the fourth quarter. Quentin Wittkopf added seven points, and Kaden Buatte finished the scoring with two points.
The Dragons are scheduled to return to action tomorrow at Hillsboro. The JV game is slated to begin at 6:15 p.m.
