The Jefferson junior varsity Blue Jays softball team salvaged its final game Saturday, and went 1-2 on the day at the Fox softball tournament. After the day’s competition, the Blue Jays stand at 4-11 on the season.
“We played good today, all in all,” said head coach Robert Kuehnle. “The girls struggled a little in the second game, but it says a lot about a team when they get beat like that and come back and win the next one.”
Saturday’s first game saw the Blue Jays take a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Lindbergh. The Flyers tied it in the second, and then went ahead for good with two runs in the fourth, leading to a 6-2 Lindbergh victory.
Jefferson managed six hits in the contest. Vanessa Forister, Catryn Cattoor, Maggie Brunke, Megan Payne, Nehley Ervin, and Alyssa Sullivan each had a hit. Ervin drove in a run. Payne took the loss in the circle, allowing just four hits while striking out five.
In the second game of the day, the Blue Jays just couldn’t get on track, losing to Fox 20-3. Jefferson could only put together three hits, a double and RBI by Cami Menke, and singles by Joceline Falkengren and Callie Fisher. Sydney Stewart and Menke shared pitching duties for Jefferson.
In the final game, the Blue Jays finally got a win, taking a 12-2 decision over Mehlville. The Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, but Mehlville pulled to within 3-2 after two innings. However, Jefferson would score nine unanswered runs to take the victory.
Big hitters for the Jays were Fisher with two hits and four RBI, Falkengren with two hits, one being a triple, Cattoor added two hits, one a double, and Brittany Bittick had two hits as well. Payne and Abi Chipps each had one hit apiece. Payne got the win in the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out six. Brunke also pitched an inning and allowed one hit, but struck out the side.
Jefferson will travel to Saxony Lutheran for a 6:00 p.m. game on Monday.
