The Hillsboro Hawks boys junior varsity basketball team started the season winning two of three in the Fox Tournament two weeks ago. And then they waited…and waited…and waited…to get on the court and do something other than practice against themselves. They finally got the opportunity last night at North County and made the most of their opportunity, defeating the host Raiders, 59-55, to improve to 3-1 on the season.
“It was good to be playing a game again,” said JV coach Brian Sucharski. “North County provided a good opportunity to work out some things we needed to. Our effort was pretty good all game.”
After falling behind after the first quarter, 12-10, the Hawks dictated the middle portion of the contest. Seven points from Kyle Phipps in the second quarter helped the Hawks to a 29-24 lead at halftime. Then, Werner Finder knocked down five points in the third quarter to help Hillsboro extend the lead to 44-36 heading into the final period.
The Raiders put the pressure on in the fourth and outscored Hillsboro. But free throws, exclusively Phipps converting eight-of-ten free tosses, allowed the Hawks to hang on for the four point victory.
Phipps was almost unstoppable at times as he accumulated 23 points in the contest. Finder finished with 15 points, while Kyle Besand chipped in with nine points. Finishing out the scoring included Noah Holland with seven points, and Patrick Lee with five.
The team will begin play in the Herky JV Christmas Tournament on December 26.
